Brittas Beach
297mm x 210mm Acrylic – Framed Print
This is my painting of the well-known and well-trodden beach of Brittas Bay in Co Wicklow.
It is the culmination of a painting about a million blades of beach grass but I liked the way they frame the painting to lead you down to the misty Irish sea.

Keel Beach – Achill

297mm x 210mm – white framed print

Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Paper print in a white frame

The beautiful beach in Keel on Achill Island. In the distance is the Minuan Cliffs.
One of my favorite things to paint is the spiky reed grass that you find on so many beaches around Ireland.
It always invokes memories of my legs being spiked as we ran through the beach dunes as children.

Loop Head

Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Paper print in a white frame

Here is my creation of Loop Head in Co Clare.

Where the puffin birds hug the cliffs and fly out to sea to catch their fish. The west coast has been crashed and pummelled by the Altantic ocean for centuries to create such a beautiful place.

The Wooden Bridge

297mm x 210mm – white framed print

Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Paper print in a white frame

My painting of the Wooden Bridge in Clontarf/ Dollymount. This was a painting commissioned as a gift for a client’s mother. The mother spent her childhood in the area before moving to England. She said as a child she was always afraid she would fall through the gaps in the boards and into the sea.

Kenmare

297mm x 210mm – Framed Print
Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Paper
This was my first completed painting for 2020.
It is of a beach near Lackeen Point in Kenmare, Co Kerry, and is from a beautifully captured photo from a truly talented local nature photographer named Sharon Leahy.
I was mesmerized with the sun shining on the sea and glowing through the sea kelp left on the pebbles as the water receded. I tried to capture that beauty in my painting.

Derrynane 297mm x 210mm – Framed Print Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Paper This painting was a wonderful journey, shared all the way with my fellow artist, the amazingly talented photographer, Sharon Leahy. It was from her photographs that capture the spirit and rugged beauty of the old Abbey Ruins in Derrynane, Co Kerry that I have tried to recreate in painting form. This wall with the three window arches is nearly 1000 years old and was supposedly built by the same order of monks from Skellig Micheal. There is a burial ground on the site that is still used and as per tradition, I believe the coffins are carried across the beach as it can only be accessed at certain times with the tides. Here the remains of “the great liberator” Daniel O Connells wife, Mary O Connell are buried. I had never heard of this place before and am always amazed at the unsurpassing history and beauty in that we are blessed to have in this land.

Keel – Achill Island Cottage
297mm x 210mm – Framed Print
This was a commission of an old cottage house in Keel in Achill Island. The house has so much character and is such a beautiful place in real life with the backdrop of the Minuan Cliffs in the distance.
There was a huge amount of little details that went into this one which I was able to do because of the larger size. Things like the individual slates on the roof, the sash windows with net curtains, and old cracks and nicks out of the old walls. All of this helps me to try my goal to have the painting look equally as good from a distance as up close.

Into the Light – Morris Castle

297mm x 210mm – Framed Print
Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Paper
There is a place in Co Wexford where you walk through a tunnel under a canopy of trees and branches that opens out into the light and leads you down to the beach. Under your feet is dark gritty sand filled with twigs that’s shrouded in shadows but the light at the end is like an entrance into another world. It’s truly beautiful.
Often when painting I’m drawn to a challenge, and this was certainly one with a thousand branches to paint.
However, I loved every second of it and the effect of the light at the entrance gives it a very mystical feel.

Even before I took on this painting, I knew it was going to be an incredible challenge. So much so that I had doubts as to whether I could capture its full depth and detail.
From the very first paint stroke I knew it would be special but at the beginning, I struggled and there were times I wondered if I had bitten off more than I could chew.
It took by far the most time and involved the most commitment to create than any previous piece. However, the end result was one of triumph and one of which I am extremely proud of.
I was both humbled and honoured when the original sold to an art client, but it was not without a tinge of emotion when I let it go

Morris Castle Storm Sea
297mm x 210mm – Framed Print
Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Paper
A painting of a stormy sea scene on the coast at Morris Castle in Co Wexford.
It was a joy to paint as it contains some of my favorite things, waves, sea froth, and beach grass.
I tried to capture a very windswept Irish sea scene with the colours and movement.

Sunset Beach
297mm x 210mm – Framed Print
Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Paper
I have often said that painting the sea is such a joy.
I can only create a few paintings before wanting to return to paint waves and the sea again. There is such wonderful movement and energy to try and capture in a painting.
I used a slightly different colour palette for this painting and tried to achieve a faint sunset glow with the light reflected on the wet sand.
